Sunday, May 3, 11 am "UU Christians & Scholars Want to Know: Who's the REAL Jesus?"
In this week's winning Thoreau auction topic, our Emeritus Minister, Rev. Dan King, returns to share a summary of some of the many reflections and speculation from modern scholars about the role and persona of Christ (born as Jeshua ben Josef).
Many self-identified Evangelical Christians have accepted the dogma of the organized Church which declares the inerrancy of what is commonly accepted as Holy Scripture (whether the Hebrew Bible or the "New Testament") as the literal Word of God recorded by the Prophets or their scribes or the words and acts of Jesus faithfully recounted by his followers. However, scholars (especially since 1500 C.E.) have examined the context of multiple collections of writings excluded from the "canon" along with the often purposeful evolution of translations of oral traditions from Aramaic, Greek, and Latin scribes. The long-running schism which eventually resulted in the identification of Unitarianism as a separate and originally purely Christian identity was about the interpretation of Jesus as less than purely Divine. Although now a small minority of UU members, contemporary UU Christians now generally refer to their own theology as a faith in the META- messages of Jesus.
