Social Action at Thoreau

Social Justice is our Faith in Action

  • Outreach

During our Shared Offering every week, we collect items for a local agency.

This month we are partnering with East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry’s Interfaith Food Pantry. As the need for food assistance continues to grow in our community, the pantry works to ensure that families have access to convenient, nourishing meals that can be easily prepared at home.

Over the month of April, we will be collecting non-perishable food items to support the pantry. At this time, there is a particular need for canned meats and ready-to-eat meals such as canned pasta. These items provide quick, protein-rich options for individuals and families who may have limited time or resources for meal preparation.

When you’re at the grocery store, please consider adding a few of these items to your basket for the pantry. Simple, shelf-stable foods like these can make a meaningful difference in helping families put a satisfying meal on the table.

    Suggested items include:
Canned meats (tuna, chicken, Spam, chili, beef stew) and canned pasta (beef ravioli, beefaroni, lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs), along with other non-perishable food items.

  • Partnerships

We share half of our Sunday Offering with a community partner. This month, we are sharing our offering with the Thoreau Dream Scholarship. Established in 2003, the Thoreau Dream Scholarship supports students and families working to overcome barriers to higher education. The program helps create opportunities for students who may not otherwise have considered post-high school education as a possibility.

The scholarship provides support for a variety of educational paths, including two-year and four-year college programs, as well as technical and certification training. By helping cover tuition and related costs, the Thoreau Dream Scholarship encourages students to pursue meaningful careers and build a strong foundation for their future.

Each year, local high school counselors identify students who could benefit from additional support and invite them to apply. Through this process, the scholarship continues to make a lasting impact—opening doors and helping students take important next steps toward their goals.

Half of all plate cash collected on Sundays this month will support the Thoreau Dream Scholarship. Your generosity helps provide direct educational support and expands opportunities for students in our broader community.

  • Service

Every few months, Thoreau offers a “Service after the Service” for the entire community to come together for a hands-on project.

Stay tuned for our next service project.

Making a difference in Fort Bend and the wider world.
