13 Nov – “Bringing your whole self to work” – NO!
Presented by Tony Veneruso
There’s been a revolution in the way we work. The latest Corporate HR rallying cry is: “Bring Your Whole Self to Work”. It means allowing yourself to be totality and truly seen in the workplace. Believe it! The Harvard Business Review devoted an entire issue to it. Companies are rolling out compliance training that requires both workers and bosses to expose their personality flaws, vulnerabilities, idiosyncratic tics, cultural heritage, identity affiliations (including gender, racial, ethnicity), relationships, children, side-projects, mantras, and all. It includes identifying your interests, hopes, dreams, and fears, even if they don’t seem relevant to your work. This “whole self” movement has gained momentum because it dovetails with fortified corporate diversity, equity and inclusion (D.E.I.) programs backed by a lucrative cottage industry of trainers and lawyers. There are also those that say that Bringing your Whole Self to Work is how diverse people work most creatively together and present their best ideas, questions and insights without fear. It means people can take off the armor of invincibility/perfection/single-mindedness and become vulnerable. Yet there’s push back. The pandemic has blurred many different compartments of our lives. People are re-evaluating their personal and professional life. Companies complain of employees “Quiet quitting” working on their work-related activities solely within working hours. It’s not quitting a job outright, but rather doing precisely what the job requires – but no more. Do not bring yourself to work – NY Times Article Sept 25, 2022
