Adult Discussion Group: “The Sugar Land 95 Experience”

Guest Speaker: Robin Cole

Our community has not been the same since the historic discovery of the Sugar Land 95in 2018, which has become a necessary catalyst in propelling our community to bravely confront the dark truth about our past local history of racial oppression and exploitation from slavery to convict leasing to segregation. S.O.J.E.S. seeks to advance a proposed collaborative effort located on the sacred burial grounds (which is located adjacent to the James Reese Career and Technical Center), including the revitalization of the cemeteries, memorial park with monument, and educational center and museum (with both indoor and outdoor learning exhibits) called “The Sugar Land 95 Experience.”

The Society for Justice & Equality for the People of Sugar Land (S.O.J.E.S.) is a local 501c3 nonprofit community organization comprised of a diverse group of neighbors and residents of Fort Bend County, Texas, who are united in their dedication to the causes of social justice and equality. S.O.J.E.S. strives to collaborate with community partners like FBISD, Fort Bend County, City of Sugar Land, State of Texas and other entities and individuals, to make The Sugar Land 95 Experience a reality, to promote healing, honor, and Justice to the victims of Convict Leasing, as well as educate the world.

Robin Cole, in addition to her professional role in executive leadership with a prominent energy sector company, is also a community activist. She founded the Society of Justice and Equality for the People of Sugar Land, Inc. (SOJES) in 2020 as a result of the need to bring together all relevant stakeholders to develop ways to honor and memorialize the Sugar Land 95. She currently serves as the President of SOJES and has a vision of creating a National State of the Art Convict Leasing Museum & Educational Center in Sugar Land, Texas which will serve to educate the World on this most horrific practice known as “Convict Leasing” as well as provide various mechanisms for Healing. Robin’s passion is to always strive for opportunities to address the needs of her community using her voice, resources and time.
