What Is the Future of Hydropower?
Presented by Tony Veneruso
Surprise, hydropower may be the world’s oldest but, at 54%, it remains the largest renewable energy source compared to solar (13%), wind (23%) and others (10%). Since America’s earliest days, it has continued to provide us with our own domestic source of economical, clean, steady power 24/7, yet we don’t hear much about it. That’s because hydropower generation in the U.S. has remained relatively steady for decades although only 3% of our 90,000 dams are equipped to generate and store power. However, internationally hydropower is growing rapidly, especially in China. Although hydropower generation is threatened as climate-driven droughts become increasingly common, it remains absolutely vital that we support and expand it intelligently.
