Adult Discussion Group

September 8 - “Dealing with homeless encampments”

Speaker:  John Veneruso : With the recent Supreme Court Case of "23-175 City of Grants Pass v. Johnson", states and cities can now criminalize homelessness.  For California, rural areas of Oregon, and many other states, this means pushing all unsheltered people out of all public spaces.  In Los Angeles, where 50% of these unsheltered people are employed in minimum wage jobs, they'll lose their jobs, and be pushed far away from social services. For the 45% of unsheltered people that have young children, schooling will be stopped.  San Francisco is offering free bussing out of town. Where will they go?  Why are housing costs unaffordable for those working a full-time minimum-wage job? Why do taxpayers prefer to criminalize homelessness rather than making straightforward changes to eliminate the problem?

Adult Discussion Group will be meeting in person @ 9:45 AM in Thoreau’s Clark Cabin except on the third Sunday of each month when we will meet in the Sanctuary @ 11 AM.

The AC and HEPA filter will be running to keep Clark Cabin & the Sanctuary as safe as possible.

For those that prefer: We will provide ZOOM via the OWL system when we meet in the cabin & our Moderator Tamara will recognize your hand up and add you to the queue.

Thoreauvians and friends will be notified each week (tuucannounce@groups.io) of our ADG topic, time and zoom login.
