December 29 “The Sun Never Set: American Territories in an Age of Decolonization”
While the famed British Empire has largely been relegated to story and song, along with its European counterparts, the United States controls five inhabited overseas territories, whose populations do not enjoy the full rights of the Constitution. The United Nations has cited three of these as “non-self-governing” and an impediment to world cooperation. What would be the proper status of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, Samoa, and the Northern Marianas? Prof. Garna Christian will lead the discussion.
