October 19, 11 am “Humor and Laughter: Philosophy, Psychology, Neuroscience and Spirituality”
Based largely on his reading of John Morreall’s book Comic Relief: a Comprehensive Philosophy of Humor and functional MRI studies of humor-related brain activity, Dr. Michael Crouch will discuss humor and laughter from the viewpoints of philosophers, religious leaders, humorists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and neuroscientists. Like fire, humor and laughter (including teasing) can be put to beneficial use, but can also cause harm. The subsequent participant discussion could address strategies for maximizing the benefit and minimizing the harm of our experience with humor. Participants will also be invited to share one of their favorite SHORT jokes, describe one of their favorite cartoons, or cite their favorite humorous movie and/or television.
Join us in-person in Thoreau’s Sanctuary or via Zoom for our discussion service.
On one Sunday a month, our Adult Discussion Group coordinates the speaker for our weekly gathering.
During ADG Sunday Service, Religious Education is offered for children 5 and over.
You are invited to join us for light snacks after ADG.
