Sunday, November 5, 11am “No Self, No Problem”
The idea that the psychological self is not real is foundational to Eastern spiritual systems such as Buddhism, Taoism, and certain branches of Hinduism. How can something so seemingly self-evident as the idea of the individual self be an illusion? In Western thought, the French philosopher, Des Cartes’ maxim, “I think, therefore I am,” is what defines humanity. In our times, the field of neuropsychology which studies the structure and function of the brain is “catching up” with ancient Eastern thought and concluding that the self is not really there! In his book “No Self, No Problem”, Chris Niebauer, PhD, cognitive neuropsychologist, presents these surprising findings, and considers the implications these may have for human psychology and spirituality.
